It’s not how much you spend, it’s the thought that counts. Here’s how to make your very own festive potpourri at home. Christmas is all about delighting the senses, so craft this smell sensation. Christmas is a fantastic time of the year for all of our senses. The beautiful and twinkling Christmas lights, the sound of jingling bells, the taste of mouth-watering turkey and pigs in blankets and the bristling feel of a festive tree – you simply cannot beat it.

A fantastic way to get ready for Christmas is to fill your home with the mistakable smells of the festive period. A Christmas themed potpourri can be a brilliant method of getting even the biggest Scrooge in the mood for the big day. Here is a simple way to craft your very own portion of potpourri using some iconic festive scents and leave your home smelling like a winter wonderland.
What you will need
A portion of cinnamon sticks
Whole allspice
Whole cloves
Whole star anise
Fresh or frozen cranberries
Orange slices, dried or fresh
How to spread the smell around your home
1) Start off by grabbing a large saucepan or a slow cooker. Add two to four cups of water, depending on the size of pot you are using.
2) Add in all of the spices, such as the allspice, cloves and star anise, as well as the orange slices, cranberries and cinnamon sticks. Now gently heat the mixture or switch on the slow cooker. Keep this cooking away on a low heat and make sure you check the mixture regularly.
3) If the contents are starting to simmer down significantly, you can add in more water to avoid anything from burning.
4) Very soon the mixture will fill your home with a delicious and festive smell.
While this recipe is fantastic for introducing a Christmas smell into your home, while also being a beautiful decoration, potpourri can also be a fantastic gift for a loved one. Simply present a portion of the potpourri ingredients in clear plastic wrapping, or “Kilner” style jar with a beautiful, red bow to seal the top.
